Biography: Suzanne Valadon grew up as a circus acrobat. After suffering from a fall, she was forced to resign her career and instead became an artists’ model. She posed for artists such as Renoir, Puvis de Chavannes, and Toulouse-Lautrec, and was romantically involved with each of them. After Toulouse-Lautrec showed some of Valadon’s drawings to Degas, he encouraged her to pursue an artistic career. She took up painting in 1896, creating portraits, still-lifes, and figure paintings. She was successful after World War I but was unable to continue in her later life because of illness. She was the mother of Maurice Utrillo.
