Biography: French artist, Georges De la Tour established his reputation at the age of twenty-seven in Luneville, where he worked under the patronage of the Duke of Lorraine. After giving a painting to King Louis XIII, the monarch was so impressed that he only displayed De la Tour’s work in his private residencies. Inspired by Caravaggio, his paintings were religious subjects painted with dark shadows and a limited color scheme to create dramatic and realistic images. Later in his career, De la Tour’s work lost its appeal and his work was not rediscovered until 1915.
