Biography: Born in Ontario, Thomas John Thomson began working as a book and periodical illustrator at Grip Limited in Toronto. During this period, he was influenced by fellow Canadian artists and co-workers, J.E.H. MacDonald and Art Lismer to take up painting as a full time career. Instead of becoming a war artist in World War I like many of the painters of that time, Thomson stayed behind in Canada. However, he died tragically in 1917 when he drowned in Canoe Lake near Wapomeo Island. Thomson’s untimely death cut short an influential and promising career but also inspired his contemporaries to continue building the foundations of Modern Canadian art.
