Biography: A librarian from Galesburg, Illinois, Dorothea Tanning moved to Chicago in 1930 and began taking evening art classes at the Academy of Fine Art. She then moved to New York in 1936 and worked as a commercial artist. Her early work attracted the attention of the Surrealists with its childhood references and dream-like circumstances. Tanning married Max Ernst in 1946 and the couple moved to France, where she worked as a graphic artist, painter, and set and costume designer.
