Biography: Michael Sweerts was a Flemish painter but worked outside of the Netherlands in places such as Italy, Syria, and India. At the age of twenty-eight, he was living in Rome and had joined the painter’s academy. Ten years later, he returned to Brussels, founded a drawing academy and joined their painter’s guild. Sweerts painted religious works, genre scenes and portraits, inspired by classical works and contemporary life. Later in his career, he traveled to Asia as a missionary, painting in Aleppo, Syria. Dismissed from the missionary due to his unruly character, he traveled to Goa, India where he died in 1664.
