Biography: Joseph-Benoit Suvee entered the Royal Academy of Bruges at the young age of eight. He won many awards before moving to Paris in 1763 to study at the Academie Royal. In 1771, he won the Prix de Rome where he studied from 1772 to 1778. While there, he made chalk drawings of the landscape, influenced by Hubert Robert and Giovanni Battista Piranesi. He received multiple official commissions for tapestry designs for the Gobelins Manufactory, religious paintings, and portraits. Suvee became director of the Academie de France at Rome in 1801, his overwhelming responsibilities causing him to stop painting.
