Biography: Although he originally wanted to become a railroad engineer, Graham Vivian Sutherland switched his career path and studied art at Goldsmith’s College in London. He began as an etcher working under Samuel Palmer, but after the stock market crash he turned to more lucrative painting. In 1934, Sutherland traveled to Wales and was inspired by the landscapes of the Pembrokeshire. He worked as a war artist during World War II and worked as a portraitist afterward. Sutherland also produced posters, ceramic designs, and textiles.
