Biography: Thomas Sully was a leading American portraitist during the 18th century. He was born in England and immigrated to the United States as a child. IN his early career, he made two return trips to England to study. The second of these trips was from 1837 to 1838 when Sully was hired to paint Queen Victoria for the Society of the Sons of St. George of Philadelphia. Sully had a prolific and successful career, painting around 2,000 portraits throughout his lifetime. However, his most famous painting is the historical piece, Washington Crossing the Delaware.
