Biography: Son of Flemish painter Francois Stella, Jacques began working for Cosimo II de’ Medici in Florence in 1616. He moved to Rome in 1623 and remained there for a decade, making a reputation based on his small paintings and engravings. While in Rome, he was influenced by Nicolas Poussin’s classical approach. In 1634, Stella visited Venice, Milan, and Lyon before arriving in Paris to become Painter to the King under Louis XIII. He remained in France, working in Paris, Rouen, and Versailles and fell victim to illness in his later life. After Stella’s death, his paintings were often sold as Poussin’s work.
