Biography:
Stanley Spencer studied at the Slade School of Art in London from 1909 to 1912. He served in the military during World War I and World War II and then returned to his hometown of Cookham where he spent most of his life. Because of his quiet and eccentric nature, Spencer created most of his work without the influence of mainstream movements, but some qualities did appear in his work. A deeply religious man, his paintings often had biblical themes. He became Sir Stanley Spencer right before his death in 1959.
