Biography: Chaim Soutine studied in Vilnius, Russia and then in Paris in 1911, where he met Chagall and Modigliani. He was introduced to Expressionism and contributed to the movement by adding elements of Fauvism and German art. Soutine enjoyed painting animal carcasses and also gruesome, emaciated portraits. Because he was a Jew, these paintings seem to be in response to the Holocaust, which he narrowly escaped after the invasion of France. Soutine died in Paris in 1943.
