Biography: Born in Valencia, Spain, Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida began painting at fifteen, traveling to Madrid three years later to copy the Old Master paintings in the Museo del Prado. Sorolla then won a grant to study in Rome. After a successful exhibition at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1901, he returned to an established reputation in Madrid. In 1911, he was commissioned by the Hispanic Society of America to paint decorative scenes in their New York library. A collection of Sorolla’s paintings were willed to the people of Spain by his widow and now are contained in the Museo Sorolla in Madrid.
