Biography: Francesco Solimena moved to Naples in 1674 and worked there for his entire career. His painting was influenced by Luca Giordona’s Baroque style and the classical elements of Pietro da Cortona’s decorative work. The shadowing he used was evidence of inspiration taken from Giovanni Lanfranco and Mattia Preti. Despite his mostly Baroque style, his figures were done in a classical style, reminiscent of Annibale Carracci, Domenichino, and Raphael. Solimena’s talent acquired him wealth, fame, the title of baron, and consistent commissions from royal patrons that included Prince Eugene of Savoy and Louis XIV of France. He was a strong influence on European art, establishing an academy that trained many next generation artists including Sebastiano Conca.
