Biography: Also known as Giovanni Antonio Bazzi, Sodoma was a shoemaker’s son who became a successful painter throughout Italy. He first studied in his native city of Siena and visited Milan around 1497, where he was influenced by Leonarda da Vinci’s art and use of sfumato. Sodoma moved to Rome in 1508 and worked on a fresco ceiling at the Vatican. In 1529, he became an official painter for the Sienese Republic. He briefly worked outside of the city beginning in 1537, but returned there for good in 1545.
