Biography:
Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld was born into a family of artists. He studied at the Vienna Academy before moving to Rome in 1818 and joining the Nazarenes. In 1827, he moved to Munich and worked for Ludwig I creating murals for his palace, the Residenz. The murals depicted the events of German history and scenes from the legend of the Niebelung. Schnorr became a professor at the Academy in Dresden in 1846 and a year later, was made the school’s Gemaldegalerie director. In his later years, his artistic output diminished because of his failing eyesight and his administrative responsibilities. His final piece was a series of Bible illustrations published as wood engravings.
