Biography: Born in Florence, Andrea del Sarto’s nickname came from his father’s occupation as a tailor. In 1511, Andrea visited Roman and then stayed in France for the duration of 1518, painting under the commission of Francois I. Other than these trips, he remained in Florence for his entire life creating his fashionable, high Renaissance, religious works. His paintings were noted for their expressiveness, portrayal of emotion and use of light and shade. Andrea del Sarto trained Jacopo Pontormo, Rosso Fiorentino, and Giorgio Vasari in his studio during the early 1510’s, his influence evident in many of their works as well as their technique of using preparatory sketches. Andrea married an affluent widow in 1518. The couple built a house in Florence not long after and subsequently, Andrea’s style became more idealized and decorative.
