Biography:
Rachel Ruysch was trained in the Classical tradition but was more interested in the Dutch School subject matter and techniques of light and shade. Although she deeply admired the work of Vermeer and Kalf, her still-life paintings of flowers were distinct in their incorporation of insects such as butterflies and bees. Ruysch was also noted for her paintings of detailed and realistic crystal vases. She lived in Amsterdam her entire life, where her paintings were immensely popular and have not lost their appeal since.
