Biography: Parisian born, Georges Rouault began his artistic career as an apprentice to a stained glass designer. He began painting under Moreau in 1892 alongside Matisse at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He briefly associated with Les Fauves in 1904, but eventually exhibited alone in 1910. Rouault used his abilities in many outlets including set design, costuming, illustration, and ceramics. Raised a Catholic, his work often displays allegorical images of man’s struggle to hold on to his faith.
