Rosso went to Rome in 1524 where he was strongly inspired by Michelangelo’s art. He went north after the Sack of Rome, eventually settling in Venice in 1530. Francois I invited him to France to work for the court on an array of projects, notably decorations for the palace of Fontainebleau. Rosso worked on Galerie Francois I from 1533 to 1540, completing this last project before his death later that year.
