Biography:
Salvator Rosa studied in Naples, influenced by the realism of Jusepe Ribera. He traveled to Rome in 1635 at the encouragement of Giovanni Lanfranco, but was forced to return in Naples in 1639 after a case of malaria. He moved to Florence where he was employed by the Medici family and founded the Accademia dei Percossi for writers and artists. Rosa returned to Rome in 1649 to work as a historical painter.
