Biography: Born in Paris, Hubert Robert was trained in Classicism, but was influenced by the Rococo movement that was popular at the time. With the influence of Watteau, Boucher, and Fragonard, he turned to realism, painting his subjects in the perceptive and dynamic manner that he was famous for. Robert was respected and emulated by his colleagues, including Voltaire who commissioned him as a set designer and to decorate his theatre at Ferney. Although he was also a talented portraitist and historical painter, it was his landscapes that exemplified his full talent.
