Biography: Francisco Rizi first trained under his father, an Italian painter who immigrated to Spain. He also may have studied with Vicente Carducho. Rizi’s early career was spent decorating buildings, producing easel painters, and designing decorations for streets and theaters. He was named painter to the king in 1656 and began painting in the Flemish style of Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony Van Dyck. The decade of the 1660’s was spent decorating multiple churches in Madrid. Encountering the Venetian style, Rizi began utilizing rich colors, drama, and illusionistic compositions. Rizi was also a popular teacher who trained many of Spain’s most talented young painters.
