Biography: William Rimmer was born in England, immigrating to the United States with his family when he was just a child. His family settled in Boston, and later in his life Rimmer worked primarily there and in New York. Rimmer’s eccentricity led him to live an interesting life with varied career ambitions. In addition to believing he was the l heir to the French throne, he also was self-taught licensed physician. Turning to art, he taught himself how to paint while working as a sign and scenery painter and a cobbler. Later in his life, Rimmer became a well-known teacher and wrote two instructional books, Elements of Design (1864) and Art Anatomy (1877). Although Rimmer did not create an abundance of sculpture during his lifetime, his work stood out as some of the most original and dramatic of his period.
