Biography: Jonathan Richardson the Elder first apprenticed with a public scribe before training with a portrait painter. He soon became one of London’s leading portraitists, known for his formality and accuracy. He was also an art collector, massing a personal collection of close to one thousand drawings. In 1715, Richardson wrote “An Essay on the Theory of Painting,” which was the first notable piece of English artistic theory. Four years later, he wrote a continuation titled “Essay on the Whole Art of Criticism as it Relates to Painting and an Argument in Behalf of the Science of the Connoisseur.” Richardson’s writings were extremely influential to artists and theorist such as Sir Joshua Reynolds and encouraged them to “raise and improve nature.”
