Biography: A French scholar born in Bordeaux, Odilon Redon used his knowledge of subjects ranging from architecture to natural history to create a body of Symbolist work. He began studying art by copying the works of Baudelaire and Delacroix in 1869. Until the 1890’s Redon worked primarily in black and white lithography and charcoal drawings. His first drawing exhibition was held in 1881, and was not well received. Many of his works were inspired by the poetry of Poe, Baudelaire, and Flaubert. Redon served as the first Vice President of the Societe des Artistes Independants in 1884. Eager to adopt color, Redon began working with oils and pastels in 1895, often creating botanical studies.
