Biography: Jean Raoux trained in Montpellier before moving to Paris to set up his own studio. In 1704, he won the Prix de Rome and finished his education at the Academie de France in Rome, also visiting Florence and Padua. While in Venice from 1707 to 1709, Raoux made the acquaintance of the leader of the Knights of Malta, who later gave him lodgings in Paris. He painted classical and literary themes with a light-hearted atmosphere, reminiscent of the work of Jean-Antoine Watteau. Raoux joined Paris’s Academie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1717. He also painted traditional and mythological portraits and genre subjects.
