Biography: Pierre Puget was born in Marseilles in 1620, beginning his career at the age of fourteen when he began apprenticing to wood sculptor, Jean Roman. He later worked in Rome as a stucco painter for Pietro da Cortona. Puget returned to Marseilles in 1643 and received many commissions, notably for sculptures for the Marseilles cathedral. He was in Genoa from 1660 to 1668, where he received royal commissions to create marble sculptures for the chateau of France’s finance minister. Upon his return to France, Puget was appointed director of the Toulon Arsenal workshop.
