Biography: Francesco Primaticcio first worked with Giulio Romano on decorations for Mantua’s Palazzo del Te. After its completion, Francois I invited him to work at his palace at Fontainebleu in 1532. While working for the court, Primaticcio was responsible for interior decoration, architecture, supervising tapestry production, and designing court celebrations. Except for several trips to Italy, he worked for the court his entire career, employed later by Henri II and Francois II. Rosso Fiorentino held a strong influence on the development of Primaticcio’s Mannerist style of French decorative art. Their efforts were the base of the School of Fontainebleu. After Rosso’s death in 1540, he became the chief designer and also completed his most renowned work, the Ulysses Gallery.
