Biography: Giovanni Ambrogio de Predis established a reputation as a illuminator and then a portrait painter. While working as the court painter to the Duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza, he hosted Leonardo da Vinci upon his arrival to Milan in 1483. The two collaborated on paintings for the Cofraternity of the Immaculate Conception. Ambrogio spent a year in Innsbruck in 1493 to stay with the new wife of Emperor Maximilian I, Sforza’s daughter. He then returned to Milan and worked as a portraitist, illuminator, and a stage set, coin, and tapestry designer. His only surviving painting is a portrait of Emperor Maximilian that was done in 1502.
