Biography: Son of painter Ambrose, Sir Edward Poynter initially studied in Italy from 1853 to 1854 where he was inspired by Michelangelo’s work. Then from 1856 to 1859, he was in Paris studying under Gleyre. He became known with his painting, Israel in Egypt and continued to gain fame thereafter as a history painter. Later in his career, his paintings decreased in scale and began working in administration. From 1871 to 1875, Poynter was the first Slade professor at University College in London. From 1894 to 1904, he was the director of the National Gallery and from 1896 to 1918 he was president of the Royal Academy.
