Biography: Jacques Andre Portail was the son of an architectural engineer and first studied in his hometown of Brest, France. In 1738, he was appointed designer to the king and was given additional responsibility for the collection of maps and paintings. He also oversaw the Salon exhibitions, managed the copying studio, and decorated all of the Louvre’s public rooms. Portail was elected to the Academie Royale in 1746 and given the title of “painter of fruits and flowers.” He also painted landscapes and portraits and drew in red and black chalk.
