Biography: Initially named Pietro Buonaccorsi, Perino del Vaga first trained in Florence under a colleague of Raphael. He traveled to Rome in 1516 with the painter, Vaga, whose name he eventually took. Perino began working in Raphael’s studio two years later and collaborated with his master on the Vatican Logge. With the onset of the plague, Perino moved to Florence for two years, but returned to Rome by 1524. His frescoes combined the influences of Michelangelo and Raphael, while also incorporating the ornamental style of Mannerist painters, Rosso Fiorentino and Parmigianino. After the Sack of Rome in 1528, Perino moved to Genoa and began a school and studied the decorations of Giulio Romano. He returned to Rome in 1536 and was given the position of principal decorator for Pope Paul III.
