Biography: Georg Pencz entered the studio of Albrecht Durer in Nuremberg in 1523. Two years later, he was banished from the city, deemed “godless” for expressing his disbelief in baptism, Christ, and transubstantiation. After a brief period in Northern Italy, Pencz was pardoned and became Nuremberg’s city painter in 1532. He returned to Italy in 1539 to visit Rome. After this trip, Pencz reached his height of success in portraiture in Nuremberg. In 1550, he was named court painter by Albert, duke of Prussia, but died before he arrived.
