Biography: Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola, also known as Parmigiano after his birthplace of Parma, was born into a family of painters, learning the craft from his father and two uncles. After working with his relatives on several churches in Parma, he moved to Rome in 1523 to work on the ceiling of the Sala dei Pontifici and individual works such as Vision of St. Jerome. Parmigiano fled to Bologna in 1527 and painted a Madonna altarpiece for St. Margaret’s convent. In 1531, he returned to Parma to work on church frescoes until he was imprisoned. He died at Cremona in 1540.
