Biography: Palma Giovane was related to the painter Palma Vecchio. He was largely self-taught, although he probably spent time in his father’s workshop and apprenticed in Rome. In 1567, he was recognized by the duke of Urbino who financed his trip to Rome. During this time, Palma absorbed the naturalist and Mannerist styles. In 1577, he received his first significant commission in the Doge’s Palace. He was later inspired by Tintoretto’s figures and Titian’s brushstroke techniques. In 1594, Palma succeeded Tintoretto as Venice’s leading artist.
