Biography: Bernard Palissy never received any formal training and stretched his interests across many fields working at times as a scientist, religious reformer, garden designer, painter, chemist, geologist, glassblower, philosopher, writer, and ceramist. He was a devoted Huguenot and was imprisoned for his beliefs and involvement in the Protestant riots. He was protected by his patron Anne de Montmorency and later the French queen, Catherine de’Medici, for whom he built a private grotto at the Tuileries palace. Palissy began giving public lectures in Paris on natural history in 1575 and became immensely popular a writer. Imprisoned again in 1588, he died two years later from his time spent in incarceration.
