Biography:
Lorenzo Ottoni was born in Rome and began working there for the Barberini family beginning in the 1670’s. He created marble portraits for Cardinal Francesco Barberini, Cardinal Antonio Barberini and Prince Maffeo Barberini. He also made busts of Pope Urban VIII and Pope Alexander VIII. Ottoni oversaw a large workshop that relied on its many assistants to complete commissions in and outside of Rome. In the 1690’s, he began receiving large-scale commissions for Roman churches to decorate using bronze and stucco. He worked at Saint Peter’s Basilica, the chapel of San Ignazio in the church of Il Gesu, and the church of San Giovanni in Laterano. In 1691, Ottani was elected to the Accademia di San Luca in Tome and later to the Assembly of Illustrious Artists
