Biography: Isack van Ostade was the younger brother of Adriaen van Ostade. He studied under his brother before working with a landscape painter, possibly Salomon van Ruysdael. Van Ostade’s early paintings were interior similar to those of his brother, but later he began painting a distinctive combination of peasant life and landscape. In addition, he produced many drawings, mostly in pen-and-ink in the style of Rembrandt van Rijn. Van Ostade joined the painter’s guild in 1643 and began painting in an Italianate style, incorporating delicate figures and architecture. Isack died an early death in 1649, and most scholars believe he would have surpassed his brother had he lived longer.
