Biography: John Hamilton Mortimer studied under Hudson, where he befriended fellow student, Joseph Wright. The two became close friends and also shared similar subject matter and style. Mortimer painted portraits, Romantic subject paintings, and conversation pieces. In the 1770’s, he began painting scenes of soldiers much like those of Salvator Rosa. Very few of Mortimer’s paintings have survived but his work can be seen through their engravings. His previously haphazard mode of living was changed after he married in 1775. However, his life ended early four years later at the age of thirty-nine.
