Biography: Born in Great Britain, Malcolm Morley worked mostly in the United States. He initially painted abstractly, but turned to figurative work in the 1960’s. During this period, he was also a leading exponent of the Superrealism movement. After 1970, his style changed again and he began painting in a more relaxed manner and portraying animals within landscapes. Morley was the first winner of the Turner Prize in 1984. This award was controversial because it was given to him for his contribution to British art, but Morley had resided in New York since 1958.
