Biography: Antonis Mor first apprenticed to Jan Van Scorel in Utrecht, becoming his assistant in 1540. He visited Italy and joined Antwerp’s Guild of Saint Luke in 1547. Not long after, he became the painter for Emperor Charles V’s minister. Mor spent the following two decades painting portraits in the Habsburg courts in Augsburg, Lisbon, London, Madrid, and Rome. In 1554, he became Philip II’s painter but decided to flee Spain because of the King’s support of the Inquisition. However, he continued to work for the monarch while in Utrecht, Brussels, and Antwerp.
