Biography: Claes Cornelisz Moeyaert was the son of an upper class Amsterdam merchant. His initial training is unknown but probably visited Italy at some point in his early education. His early work shows the simple styles of Adam Elsheimer and Pieter Lastman. He painted biblical and mythological narratives set in warm landscapes. At this point in his career, he was also creating etchings. Moeyart began using more color and varied motifs upon Rembrandt van Rijn’s arrival in Amsterdam. In addition to painting, he produced detailed preparatory drawings, festival decorations, religious works, and some group portraits. He was the mentor of Nicolaes Berchem and influential in later generations of Dutch artists.
