Biography: Born into a Jewish family in Italy, Amedeo Modigliani received his formal training in Florence and Venice, studying the work of 15th century painter, Botticelli. His unique linear style combined this influence with that of sculptor, Constantin Brancusi, whom Modigliani met in 1909. With Brancusi’s assistance, he experimented in stone sculptures under materials became scarce with the outbreak of World War I. Modigliani began painting elongated portraits and nudes, which attracted little praise from critics. His perilous and reckless lifestyle, however, created more attention from the public, and ultimately caused his death from tuberculosis at the age of thirty-five. Devastated by his passing, his mistress and model, Jeanne Hebuterne killed herself the following day while carrying Modigliani’s child.
