Biography: Born in Durban, South African, Louis Khela Maqhubela studied under Cecil Skomes and Sydney Kumalo at the Polly Street Art Center in his hometown. His paintings were a combination of abstract figures, symbolism, and genre scenes of everyday life. Even with the oppression during the apartheid, Maqhubela exhibited his work in Johannesburg galleries. After receiving a prize for his work, he traveled to England to study under Douglas Portway, a fellow South-African abstract artist. He also trained at Goldsmiths College and the Slade school of Art from 1985 to 1987. Maqhubela set up a studio in London, and now divides his time between England and Johannesburg.
