Biography: Spanish painter, Pedro Machuca was one of the first artists of his nationality to adopt the Renaissance style. He was in Italy for the beginning of his career. His fist known work, Virgin with the Souls of Purgatory, was painted during this time. He returned to Granada, Spain in 1520. He was then employed as the architect of Charles V’s new palace in the city. After this commission, he abandoned his painting and devoted his time to the project.
