Biography:
Johann Carl Loth first studied under his father the Bavarian court Painter, Johann Ulrich Loth. After visiting Rome in the early 1650’s, he moved to Venice and worked under Giovanni Battista Langetti. He developed a style similar to that of Caravaggio, incorporating naturalism and chiaroscuro. His altarpieces and paintings were popular among monarchs, notably the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I. Loth was appointed his court painter in 1692.
