Biography: Giovanni Paolo Lomazzo was born and lived in Milan. He began his career as a painter, but lost his sight at the age of thirty-three and turned to writing. He published two treatises on art titled, Trattato dell’arte e la pittura, scoltura, et architettura and Idea del tempio della pittura. The former of these was the most extensive treatise on art written during the 16th century. It consisted of seven volumes and was nicknamed The Bible of Mannerism. The manuscript was translated and published in English in 1598 by Richard Haydocke, who titled it A Tracte Containing the Artes of Curious Paintinge, Carvinge, and Buildinge. Lomazzo also wrote poetry and several other treatises. His paintings are very rare, particularly his self-portrait that is located at the Brera museum in Milan.
