Biography: Born in Germany, Johann Liss trained in the Netherlands, perhaps under Goltzius in Amsterdam. He then visited Paris before moving to Italy around 1620. He worked mostly in Venice but also spent time in Rome. He was strongly inspired by the work of Caravaggio. His work was popular and respected in Venice, particularly his painting, Vision of St. Jerome, located in the church of S. Nicolo da Tolentino. Liss died in Verona in 1631.
