Biography: Frederic Leighton gained worldly experience traveling across Europe in his early life. He studied in Frankfurt, Rome, and Paris before settling in England in 1859. He had gained a reputation four years earlier when his painting, Cimabue’s Madonna Carried in Procession through the Streets of Florence was exhibited at the Royal Academy show. Queen Victoria purchased the painting. Despite this achievement, his reputation in England and internationally grew slowly, reaching its height in the middle of the 1860’s. He was elected President of the Royal Academy in 1878. His artistic output consisted of portraits, book illustrations, and Classical Greek-inspired paintings. Leighton was made a baronet in 1886.
