Biography: Taught by his father, Edwin Henry Landseer first exhibited his paintings at the Royal Academy at the age of thirteen. He focused on animal figures, often dogs or deer, set in romantic landscapes of England. His work became very fashionable and subsequently, Queen Victoria knighted him in 1850. His reputation changed after his death, many critics seeing his work as shallow and glorifying of violent sports. Despite these claims, Sir Edwin Landseer’s work had a profound impact on later British artists.
